You should take the test before you apply for naturalisation as a British citizen, provided you meet all the other requirements for naturalisation. If you are giving the test after 1st April 2007 you need to appear for the test before applying for indefinite leave to remain

6. How much will the British citizenship test cost and how do I pay for it?
The test costs £34. You will need to pay this fee at your test centre before you take the test
7. What are the identification requirements for the test?
You need to bring photographic ID with you to your test centre to present to the test supervisor.
Any one of the following are accepted.
a) Passport
b) UK Photocard Driving license
c) an Immigration Status Document, endorsed with a UK Residence Permit and bearing a photo of the holder
d) passport-sized photograph of yourself. This photograph should be signed on the back by a professional such as a doctor, minister of religion or teacher who is known to you.
8. Is the UK citizenship test available in other formats?
The UK citizenship test will only be available to take on a computer at an official test centre.
The test is computer-based and is a series of 24 questions. If you take the test before 1 April 2007, it will be based on chapters 2, 3 and 4 of 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship.' If you take the test on or after 1 April 2007, it will be based on the second edition of 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship'.
10. How long does the test last?
You will have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions. This gives you plenty of time to choose your answers and check them again before the end.
11. When do I get the results?
You will find out your results when the test session has finished. The test supervisor will tell you whether or not you have passed.
12. Is there a minimum passing mark?
You have to get a minimum of 18 questions right out of 24 (75 percent)
13. What happens if I fail the UK citizenship test?
Your test supervisor will advise you if you have failed the test. You should not make an application for naturalisation as a British citizen or for indefinite leave to remain if this happens. You will have to wait a minimum of 7 days to take the test again.
